Fishing is more than a way to catch fish. It is a way of paying attention — to water, to what lives in it, and to what shapes it. Wherever there is water there is something happening, something worth understanding. A fishing rod doesn't just help you find fish. It pulls you into a different relationship with the places you fish, whether those waters are a block away or beyond city limits.
Hi, I'm Marc Fryt (pronounced frit) — a fly fishing guide, writer, and photographer based in Spokane, Washington. I'm the author of The Guide to Urban Fly Fishing (Chelsea Green/Penguin Random House, 2026), a book about fly fishing urban waters, reading what's in them, and using a fly rod as a way of knowing the places we live in more honestly.
This blog passes along information and observations from my time on the water — practical fishing content alongside the bigger questions that come with paying close attention to waters we fish. I'm still learning. The water keeps teaching.
If you have questions, want to book a guided trip, or just want to talk about the water you've been fishing — let's get in touch.
